Bring a worry to Gemini and you often get a long, information-heavy reply, because an AI connected to search leans toward explaining. When you want to sort out a feeling, you need to steer it toward listening. Save that direction once in a Gem and every conversation you start with it begins the same way.

At a glance

  • A Gem saves instructions in Gemini. On gemini.google.com, open Gems in the sidebar, choose New Gem, enter a name and instructions and save. Google says that starting in November 2026, Gems on personal accounts will transition to skills automatically.
  • Put “listen first, one question at a time, advice only when asked, a five-line summary at the end” in the instructions, and paste that summary into your next conversation to continue.

Why Gemini's replies to a worry run long

Gemini is a general-purpose AI connected to search, and it is good at gathering and organizing information. Type “I can't sleep lately” and a list of sleep hygiene tips often comes first. When you want to sort out a feeling, questions help more than information. Tell it in advance to reflect your words back, ask one thing at a time and give advice only when you ask.

How to save the instructions in a Gem

  1. On a computer, go to gemini.google.com and open Gems in the sidebar.
  2. Choose New Gem and give it a name such as “Thinking it through.”
  3. Paste the text below into the instructions field and save.
  4. Whenever you want to talk something through, choose this Gem to start the conversation.

Instructions to paste as-is

“I am here to sort out something on my mind. Only give information or advice when I ask for it. First reflect back what I said in two or three sentences, then ask one question at a time. Answer in short sentences rather than lists. Do not assume things I have not said, and correct yourself if I say you got it wrong. Do not make judgments about diagnoses or medication. When we finish, summarize in five lines: what we looked at, what I noticed, what I will try and what to talk about next.”

Google's help center says that starting in November 2026, Gems on personal Google accounts will transition to skills automatically (checked October 2026). Even if the name in the menu changes, the instructions above still work. If you would rather not use a Gem, paste the same text as the first message of a new conversation.

Opening lines to use with your Gem

What you wantWhat to sendWhat to check in the reply
Look at one momentI want to talk about the most recent hard moment. Ask me one at a time when, where and what happened.Questions arrive one at a time, not a list of solutions
Separate thoughts and feelingsOrganize what I just described into the situation, the thought I had, the feeling and what I did.It corrects the summary when I say it is off
Choose a small stepI want to choose the smallest thing I could try this week. Ask me when and how much. The step is small and I get to choose

If replies get long again, add “two sentences, no lists.” If information comes first, add “right now I want to sort out my own story, not get information.” For openers tailored to relationships, work or family, see worry prompts by situation, and for what each prompt does, see seven ChatGPT prompts for talking through a worry.

Picking up in the next conversation

Thanks to the last line of the instructions, each conversation ends with a five-line summary. Keep it in your notes and paste it as the first message next time to pick up where you left off. How much Gemini draws on past conversations depends on your account and settings, so pasting it yourself is the most reliable. If you use Claude, you can save the same instructions in a project — see Claude prompts for talking through a worry.

Three habits for talking to Gemini about your feelings

  • Decide what to leave out: skip names, contact details, addresses and medical documents, and don't upload them as Gem knowledge files either. Check your account's activity settings to see whether conversations are saved.
  • Don't treat the AI's words as a conclusion: if Gemini names a condition, don't take it as a settled judgment. Confirm anything important with official sources or a professional.
  • Talk to people too: discuss big decisions with someone you trust. Korea's guideline on using generative AI for mental health makes the same recommendation.

If you would rather not manage instructions yourself

A Gem makes starting easier, but keeping summaries and remembering what you planned to try are still up to you. CareOps Maeumi is an AI counseling app that takes this on. An intake conversation clarifies your concern and the change you want, sessions draw on approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and motivational interviewing, and Maeumi remembers past sessions and plans so the next conversation continues from there. Frequently asked questions

How do I create a Gemini Gem?
On a computer, open Gems in the gemini.google.com sidebar, choose New Gem, enter a name and instructions and save. Google says Gems on personal accounts will transition to skills automatically starting in November 2026.
Is it okay to talk through a worry with Gemini?
You can use it to sort out a worry and find information about counseling. Diagnoses and medication are decided in clinical care, so it is safer not to treat the AI's words as a conclusion. Leave out personal details and discuss big decisions with people as well.
What if Gemini's replies are too long?
Add “short sentences instead of lists, one question at a time” to the instructions, and repeat “two sentences only” during the conversation. If information comes first, redirect with “right now I want to sort out my own story.”
