Many people now open ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude first when something is weighing on them. For getting one thing off your chest, that is often enough. But what else helps when the same worry keeps coming back? Here is an item-by-item look at general-purpose AI and apps built for counseling conversations.

At a glance

  • ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude are general-purpose assistants; an AI counseling app is built around the flow of counseling: a first session, ongoing sessions, practice, and review.
  • For a one-off worry, a general assistant is often enough. If the same concern keeps returning or you want to work on it steadily, an app with continuing sessions fits better.
  • CareOps Maeumi starts with questionnaires and a first session, draws on approaches such as CBT and ACT, remembers earlier sessions, and offers a separate counselor plan for feedback from a person.

How many people talk to AI about their worries?

The Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs surveyed 1,019 people aged 15 to 79 who had used generative AI in the past month (August to September 2026). 68.8% also used it for emotional purposes such as everyday conversation, comfort, or counseling. 79.9% said an AI answer or suggestion had helped them, and 54.9% said a conversation had made their situation clearer.

The picture is similar in the United States. In a survey of adults with an ongoing mental health condition who had used an AI chatbot in the past year, 48.7% had used it for psychological support. Talking to AI about what is on your mind is already common.

General-purpose AI and AI counseling apps: what is different?

The difference comes from what each was built for. A general assistant is made to help with anything from writing to search to code; a counseling app is built around the order in which counseling unfolds. The right-hand column below describes CareOps Maeumi.

When a general assistant is enough

  • When you want to talk through something that happened today and sort out your thoughts once
  • When you need information, such as what CBT is or what counseling typically costs
  • When you want to polish a message or rehearse what to say

Sentences that work well for this are collected in seven prompts for talking to ChatGPT about a worry.

When a counseling app fits better

  • When the same worry has been coming back for weeks and you explain it from the beginning each time
  • When you want to go beyond comfort and look at how your thoughts, feelings, and actions connect
  • When you want to try what you decided in daily life and look back on it in the next conversation
  • When you want feedback from a human counselor in addition to conversations with AI

What has research found about AI built for counseling?

A 2023 meta-analysis pooling 15 randomized controlled trials of AI-based conversational agents found meaningful reductions in symptoms of depression and psychological distress. Effects were larger for agents that used generative AI and were delivered in mobile apps, and there was no clear difference in overall well-being.

In 2025, researchers at Dartmouth College published a randomized trial in which 210 adults were assigned either to use Therabot, a generative AI chatbot fine-tuned by experts, for four weeks or to a waitlist. According to the researchers, participants with depression saw an average 51% reduction in symptoms and those with generalized anxiety an average 31% reduction.

Both studies looked at programs designed around the structure of counseling rather than general chatbots. That is why, when choosing an AI counseling app, it helps to check which approaches it draws on and how its conversations are structured. See how to choose a counseling app for more.

How does CareOps Maeumi work?

CareOps Maeumi is an AI counseling app that starts with questionnaires and a first session. Its conversations are informed by established approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), behavioral activation (BA), and motivational interviewing (MI). It suggests a way of working that fits you and keeps to the same direction from session to session.

  • It remembers what you talked about and agreed on last time and picks it up in the next session.
  • Exercises such as thought records, behavioral experiments, and values work happen step by step inside the conversation.
  • At the end of a session it summarizes what you covered and what to continue next time.
  • On the separate counselor plan, a qualified counselor reads your conversations and sends feedback and tasks on scheduled days.

Your first session is free. You can preview how a first session unfolds. Diagnosis and medication are decided with a licensed clinician, and you can use Maeumi alongside therapy or medical care.

Three things to keep in mind with any AI

In October 2026, Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korean Neuropsychiatric Association released guidelines on using generative AI for mental health purposes. They center on three points.

  1. Check before you start: look at what the service was built for and on what basis, and how it handles personal data. Leave out your name, contact details, address, and documents such as medical certificates or prescriptions.
  2. Treat what AI says as input rather than a conclusion: if an AI names a condition or a level of risk, hold it loosely instead of as a settled medical judgment, and confirm important information with official sources or a professional.
  3. Talk to people too: discuss major decisions with someone you trust or a professional. If your time with AI grows while conversations with family and friends shrink, step back on purpose.

If things feel urgent

If you are worried about your immediate safety, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line in your country. In Korea, call 109 (suicide prevention) or 1577-0199 (mental health crisis line); both are open 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Is it okay to use ChatGPT for counseling-style conversations?
It can help you sort out your thoughts or find information. If you want to keep working on the same concern, you need a structure that carries earlier conversations forward and reviews what you practiced, so consider an app built for counseling or a human counselor as well.
How is an AI counseling app different from ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a general-purpose assistant; an AI counseling app is built around the flow of counseling. CareOps Maeumi starts with questionnaires and a first session, draws on established approaches, remembers earlier sessions, and includes practice and notes in the conversation.
Can I combine AI conversations with a human counselor?
Yes. On the separate CareOps counselor plan, a qualified counselor reads your conversations with Maeumi and sends feedback and tasks on scheduled days; availability depends on your region. If you already see a counselor or clinician, you can use Maeumi in between.
Is CareOps Maeumi free?
Your first session is free. After that you can choose a plan or open a single session. See the CareOps home page for current pricing.
