Read our full editorial standards →You describe a difficult day and receive a list of exercises, routines and productivity tips. The suggestions may arrive before you have explained what mattered. You can ask for a different kind of response: help putting the experience into words, one clarifying question, or advice only after you have finished. The examples below are ways to express that preference.
At a glance
- Say whether you want advice or help making sense of the experience.
- Set a concrete response boundary, such as one question at a time.
- If the response misses the point, name the mismatch and request a revision.
Describe what listening would look like
'Be empathetic' leaves room for many different responses. Try something observable: 'Before suggesting solutions, summarize what I said in two sentences. Then ask only the one question that would most help you understand.' Read the next answer to see whether it reflects your meaning. A request can guide the exchange, but it does not guarantee that every response will follow it correctly.
Requests you can adapt to your own conversation
Choose one sentence and adapt it to your own voice. You can describe a response preference without including names or workplace identifiers. Asking for a short reply also limits how much you need to read at once. Rather than requiring agreement with every interpretation, ask the AI to check whether it has understood your experience. That leaves room to examine both the event and your interpretation.
- 'Right now I want help organizing the story before advice. Check which part felt most important to me.'
- 'Please ask one question at a time and wait for my answer before moving on.'
- 'Please don't assume a cause or another person's intention that I haven't established.'
- 'After we have explored this, I'd like us to choose just one action to try.'
An example: correcting a response that misses the point
Imagine explaining a workplace conflict and receiving a long time-management plan. You might reply, 'The main issue isn't a lack of time. I felt hurt because my suggestions kept being passed over. I'd like to look at that moment first.' Identify the missing point in one sentence instead of rewriting the entire story. If the exchange keeps missing your needs, you can pause it or choose another source of support.
State your preferences when talking with Maeumi, too
CareOps Maeumi is an AI counseling app that begins with an intake and self-assessments and continues through sessions. You can explain whether today you want to be heard first or want help choosing a small practice. Correct a misunderstanding when it appears. Read the first-session guide for the starting flow, or prepare a conversation summary if you want to bring context from an earlier exchange.
Frequently asked questions
- Could this just make the AI tell me what I want to hear?
- Asking to be heard first is different from asking for agreement with every interpretation. You can add, 'Once I've explained, I'd like to consider other possible interpretations too.' Check facts and important decisions beyond a single AI response.
