When you need somewhere to talk but cost is the first worry, “free AI counseling” is often where you start looking. Yet “free” means different things: sometimes only the download is free, sometimes the first conversation, sometimes the whole service. This guide sorts out what free can mean before you open up, and how to start for free and keep working on what's on your mind.

At a glance

  • Free comes in several kinds: a free download, free questionnaires, a free first session, a capped number of chats or a trial that renews. Check which one first.
  • A free AI chat can help you sort out thoughts and feelings. To keep working on a concern, you need something that remembers past talks and follows counseling approaches.
  • CareOps Maeumi offers sign-up, the intake questions, the initial check-in and the first session for free. Later sessions are paid; current pricing is shown in the app.

What kinds of “free” are there in AI counseling?

The word is the same, but what's free differs from one service to the next. Meeting a payment prompt halfway through a long conversation can break the flow, so check which kind you're looking at before you start.

Kind of freeWhat is freeWhat to check first
Free downloadInstalling the app and signing upWhether you have to pay to start a conversation after signing up
Free questionnairesSelf-checks or the first set of questionsWhether they work without logging in and where results are kept
Free first sessionOne first conversation (session)What you need to pay to continue after the first session
Capped free useA set number of chats per day or monthWhat happens when you run out, and whether you can still see past notes
Trial that renewsOnly during a set trial periodWhether you register a payment method first, when and how much you'll be charged, and where to cancel

None of these is bad in itself. Knowing what you're getting for free simply leaves the choice to continue in your hands. Before paying, read the conditions shown in the app once more. Before writing about sensitive matters, it also helps to check how conversations are stored, for example in a privacy policy.

What can a free AI conversation help with?

Even a short free conversation can help you sort things out. Writing a worry to a general-purpose AI chatbot is one way to begin.

  • Sorting out your thoughts: putting what keeps circling in your head into words makes it clearer what's bothering you.
  • Naming feelings: breaking “I just feel bad” into hurt, worry or resentment gives you something to work with.
  • Choosing one small step: instead of a big resolution, it helps you pick one thing you can do today.
  • Preparing for counseling: before seeing a counselor, you can organize what you want to say.

For ways to phrase a worry to a general-purpose AI, see prompts for talking through a concern. For how general AI and counseling apps differ, see general AI vs. counseling apps.

What do you need to keep working on a concern?

Some worries ease after one conversation, but recurring ones often need several. In that case, look at these five things alongside whether it's free.

  1. Does it remember past conversations? You shouldn't have to start from scratch each time; it should pick up what you discussed before.
  2. Does it follow counseling approaches? Check whether it says how it works with your concern, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).
  3. Is there something to do between conversations? Thought records or small exercises carry the conversation into daily life.
  4. How does it handle what you share? Check where conversations are stored and how you can delete them.
  5. Is there a route to human help? When things feel too heavy to handle alone, it matters whether you can move on to a counselor or clinician.

Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korean Neuropsychiatric Association raised similar points in their October 2026 guidelines on using generative AI for mental health.
