How to read the WHO-5 Well-Being Index
The WHO-5 is a short well-being measure from the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe, most widely used in its 1998 version. Instead of asking about problems, it asks how often you have been in a good state. The items cover the past two weeks: feeling cheerful, calm, active and vigorous, waking up refreshed and finding daily life interesting. This page uses an English translation of the CareOps version, which has not been independently validated in English.
Reading your results
Higher scores mean better well-being. The result screen shows the raw total out of 25, not the percentage score often reported elsewhere, with 0–13 as lower well-being and 14–25 as higher well-being. Notice which item was lowest: rest, interest or energy each point somewhere different. If the score stays low for more than two weeks and enjoyment has mostly gone, it is worth talking to someone rather than carrying it alone.
A question to reflect on
Choose the item you rated lowest. Recall a recent day when that area felt a little better and write down what was different. Repeat one thing from that day on purpose this week.
Frequently asked questions
- How many questions are in Well-being (WHO-5), and how long does it take?
- There are 5 questions, and it usually takes about 1 minute. For each question you choose one of 6 answers, from “At no time” to “All of the time”. There are no right or wrong answers.
- Why is my result out of 25 instead of 100?
- This page shows the raw sum of the five items. Do not compare it directly with percentage scores you may see elsewhere; read it using the ranges on the result screen.
- I don't feel bad, so why is my score low?
- The WHO-5 asks how often you felt good, not how often you felt bad. If enjoyment or energy has faded, the score can be low even without obvious distress.
- Why does it ask about the past two weeks?
- It looks at a slightly longer pattern than one or two days. Retaking it after about two weeks lets you compare what has changed.
- Do I need to sign in? Are my answers saved?
- You can see your results right away without signing in. Your answers are used only for scoring and are not stored on our servers.
- Can I bring these results into a counseling session?
- Use the analysis button at the bottom of the result screen to have a short conversation with Maeumi without signing in. After the conversation, you can continue in the app. The web conversation does not transfer automatically to the app.
- Can I share my results with a friend?
- Yes. Use Share at the top right of the result screen to send a friend the check itself, or share your result as a link or story image. A result link carries your scores inside the address only; it does not include your name or account, and nothing is saved on our side.
