GAD-7 anxiety check: reading your score

The GAD-7 is a screening questionnaire for generalized anxiety published by Spitzer, Kroenke, Williams and Löwe in 2006. It asks about feeling nervous or on edge, not being able to stop worrying, worrying too much about different things, trouble relaxing, restlessness, irritability and a sense that something awful might happen. You rate how often each bothered you over the last two weeks.

Reading your results

Each question scores 0–3, for a total of 0–21. The result screen shows 0–4 as minimal, 5–9 as mild, 10–14 as moderate and 15–21 as severe. Notice whether your higher answers are about thoughts, such as worry you cannot stop, or about the body, such as restlessness. The score is for screening; a diagnosis is made in a clinical conversation. If you score 10 or more, or worry is affecting sleep, work or relationships, consider talking with a professional.

A question to reflect on

Write down the worry you held onto longest this week. Underneath, note how likely it really is and one first step you could take if it happened. This helps separate worrying from the parts you can act on.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are in Anxiety (GAD-7), and how long does it take?
There are 7 questions, and it usually takes about 2 minutes. For each question you choose one of 4 answers, from “Not at all” to “Nearly every day”. There are no right or wrong answers.
Does a GAD-7 score of 10 mean I have an anxiety disorder?
On the result screen, 10–14 is the moderate range, which is a good reason for a closer look with a professional. Whether it is an anxiety disorder depends on how long symptoms have lasted and how they affect your life.
How is the GAD-2 different from the GAD-7?
The GAD-2 asks only the first two GAD-7 questions, about nervousness and uncontrollable worry. The GAD-7 also covers trouble relaxing, irritability and a sense of dread.
Can I take it right before an exam or presentation?
You can, but it asks about the whole last two weeks. Answer with your usual state over that period in mind rather than today's nerves.
Do I need to sign in? Are my answers saved?
You can see your results right away without signing in. Your answers are used only for scoring and are not stored on our servers.
Can I bring these results into a counseling session?
Use the analysis button at the bottom of the result screen to have a short conversation with Maeumi without signing in. After the conversation, you can continue in the app. The web conversation does not transfer automatically to the app.
Can I share my results with a friend?
Yes. Use Share at the top right of the result screen to send a friend the check itself, or share your result as a link or story image. A result link carries your scores inside the address only; it does not include your name or account, and nothing is saved on our side.
