Five questions about food and your body
The SCOFF is a five-item screening questionnaire for eating concerns published by Morgan, Reid and Lacey in the BMJ in 1999. It asks whether you make yourself sick because you feel uncomfortably full, worry that you have lost control over how much you eat, have recently lost a lot of weight, believe you are fat when others say you are too thin, and feel that food dominates your life. You answer yes or no, and this page uses an English translation of the CareOps Korean version.
Reading your results
The total ranges from 0 to 5. The result screen shows 0–1 as below the screening threshold and 2 or more as a range where further assessment is suggested. Which questions you answered yes to shows whether the concern leans toward control over eating or toward thoughts about weight and shape. In this version the weight item asks about losing more than 6 kg in three months. A diagnosis is made in a clinical conversation; if you scored 2 or more, or eating is unsettling your daily life, please talk with a professional.
A question to reflect on
For one week, note the time of each meal and your mood before and after. Rather than what or how much you ate, focus on whether you were hungry, eating because of feelings, or holding back and then eating a lot at once. This shows how eating connects with mood.
Frequently asked questions
- How many questions are in Eating concerns (SCOFF), and how long does it take?
- There are 5 questions, and it usually takes about 1 minute. For each question you choose one of 2 answers, from “No” to “Yes”. There are no right or wrong answers.
- What does SCOFF stand for?
- It comes from key words in the five original questions: Sick, Control, One stone, Fat and Food. Each item covers one area: making yourself sick, control over eating, weight loss, body image and how much food takes over.
- I binge but don’t make myself sick. Is this still relevant?
- Yes. Separate questions ask about losing control over eating and food dominating your life, so you can answer yes to those without making yourself sick. Look at which items you said yes to.
- My weight hasn’t changed, but I’m worried.
- Eating concerns can exist without weight change. If thoughts about food and your body take up much of your day, that alone is a reason to talk about it, whatever the score.
- Do I need to sign in? Are my answers saved?
- You can see your results right away without signing in. Your answers are used only for scoring and are not stored on our servers.
- Can I bring these results into a counseling session?
- Use the analysis button at the bottom of the result screen to have a short conversation with Maeumi without signing in. After the conversation, you can continue in the app. The web conversation does not transfer automatically to the app.
- Can I share my results with a friend?
- Yes. Use Share at the top right of the result screen to send a friend the check itself, or share your result as a link or story image. A result link carries your scores inside the address only; it does not include your name or account, and nothing is saved on our side.
