How strongly your body reaches for a cigarette
The Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) is a six-item test that Heatherton, Fagerström and colleagues published in 1991 as a revision of the earlier Fagerström Tolerance Questionnaire. It asks how soon after waking you smoke, whether it is hard to refrain where smoking is not allowed, which cigarette you would hate most to give up, how many cigarettes you smoke a day, whether you smoke more in the morning and whether you smoke when ill in bed. You answer about your current smoking, and this page uses an English translation of the CareOps Korean version.
Reading your results
The total ranges from 0 to 10. The result screen shows 0–2 as very low, 3–4 as low, 5 as moderate, 6–7 as high and 8–10 as very high dependence. Time to the first cigarette and cigarettes per day say a lot about how strongly your body seeks nicotine, so look at those two answers alongside the total. Higher dependence can mean stronger withdrawal when you quit. A diagnosis is made in a clinical conversation; if you are thinking about quitting, bringing your score to a stop-smoking service or a clinician can help you choose an approach.
A question to reflect on
For three days, note the time and what you were doing just before each cigarette. Pick one trigger that shows up often, such as coffee, after meals or a stressful moment, and decide on a two-minute alternative to do at that moment instead.
Frequently asked questions
- How many questions are in Smoking habits (FTND), and how long does it take?
- There are 6 questions, and it usually takes about 1 minute. Each question has its own set of choices; pick the one closest to you. There are no right or wrong answers.
- Does it work for vaping?
- The FTND was written for cigarettes, asking about cigarettes per day and time to the first cigarette. If you only vape, the questions may not fit exactly, so treat the result as a rough guide.
- Which questions matter most?
- Time to the first cigarette after waking and cigarettes per day carry a large share of the score. Wanting to smoke right after waking suggests your body is reaching for nicotine after a night without it.
- Does a low score mean quitting will be easy?
- Physical dependence may be low, but habits and feelings tied to smoking can still make quitting hard. Tracking when you smoke can reveal triggers the score doesn’t show.
- Do I need to sign in? Are my answers saved?
- You can see your results right away without signing in. Your answers are used only for scoring and are not stored on our servers.
- Can I bring these results into a counseling session?
- Use the analysis button at the bottom of the result screen to have a short conversation with Maeumi without signing in. After the conversation, you can continue in the app. The web conversation does not transfer automatically to the app.
- Can I share my results with a friend?
- Yes. Use Share at the top right of the result screen to send a friend the check itself, or share your result as a link or story image. A result link carries your scores inside the address only; it does not include your name or account, and nothing is saved on our side.
