DAR-5: understanding the shape of your anger
The Dimensions of Anger Reactions-5 is a brief five-item anger measure whose usefulness Forbes and colleagues described in a 2014 paper. Rather than simply asking whether you get angry, it breaks anger into parts. The five items cover how often anger comes up, how intense it is, how long it lasts, whether it leads to aggressive behaviour and whether it causes problems in close relationships. Answer for the past four weeks. This page uses an English translation of the CareOps version, which has not been independently validated in English.
Reading your results
The result screen shows 5–11 as below the screening threshold, 12–17 as further assessment suggested and 18–25 as higher anger-related difficulty. The same total can come from frequent anger that fades quickly or from rare anger that spills into actions or relationships, and these call for different responses. Look first at which of the five items scored highest. Anger is not a bad emotion in itself; noticing what repeatedly sets it off is the starting point.
A question to reflect on
Choose the moment in the past four weeks when you were angriest. Write down what happened just before, the first signal in your body such as heat, clenched fists or faster speech, and what you did next. Recognising the body's signal gives you room to pause next time.
Frequently asked questions
- How many questions are in Anger responses (DAR-5), and how long does it take?
- There are 5 questions, and it usually takes about 1 minute. For each question you choose one of 5 answers, from “None or almost none of the time” to “Almost all the time”. There are no right or wrong answers.
- I get angry often, so why isn't my score high?
- The DAR-5 looks at intensity, duration, behaviour and relationships as well as frequency. Anger that comes often but settles quickly and does not spill into actions may not raise the total much.
- I usually keep my anger in. Does this still apply?
- Anger that lingers inside without being shown is captured by the duration item. Also notice whether held-in anger builds up and affects your relationships.
- Does a high score mean I have an anger problem?
- The score summarizes how anger showed up over the past four weeks. If it is in the higher range, it is worth exploring with someone which situations keep triggering it.
- Do I need to sign in? Are my answers saved?
- You can see your results right away without signing in. Your answers are used only for scoring and are not stored on our servers.
- Can I bring these results into a counseling session?
- Use the analysis button at the bottom of the result screen to have a short conversation with Maeumi without signing in. After the conversation, you can continue in the app. The web conversation does not transfer automatically to the app.
- Can I share my results with a friend?
- Yes. Use Share at the top right of the result screen to send a friend the check itself, or share your result as a link or story image. A result link carries your scores inside the address only; it does not include your name or account, and nothing is saved on our side.
