A week that felt different from your usual self
The Altman Self-Rating Mania Scale (ASRM) is a five-item self-rating scale published by Altman and colleagues in 1997. It covers five areas: feeling happier or more cheerful than usual, self-confidence, need for sleep, talkativeness and activity level. In each area you choose the description that best fits you over the past week, and this page uses an English translation of the CareOps Korean version.
Reading your results
The total ranges from 0 to 20. The result screen shows 0–5 as below the screening threshold, 6–11 as a range where further assessment is suggested and 12–20 as a higher symptom burden. The questions compare you with your usual self, so answer about how this week differed rather than about a naturally lively personality. Feeling good is not a problem in itself, but going with very little sleep without feeling tired or rushing into decisions you would not usually make is worth a closer look. A diagnosis is made in a clinical conversation; if you scored 6 or more or these changes last several days, consider talking with a clinician.
A question to reflect on
For the next week, at the same time each day, write down how long you slept, your mood (0–10) and your activity level (0–10). Seeing whether nights of less sleep move together with higher mood and activity makes your mood pattern much easier to describe.
Frequently asked questions
- How many questions are in Elevated mood and activity (ASRM), and how long does it take?
- There are 5 questions, and it usually takes about 1 minute. Each question has its own set of choices; pick the one closest to you. There are no right or wrong answers.
- Will an energetic personality give me a high score?
- The ASRM asks about changes compared with your usual self. If you have always been lively, answer about how this past week compared with that, not about your personality.
- Isn’t feeling good a good thing?
- It is. But if sleep drops sharply without tiredness, talking and activity become hard to slow down, and racing ideas start unsettling daily life, the change is worth looking at.
- Can I take it alongside a depression check?
- Yes. Mood can move up or down, and looking at both together shows the pattern better than either alone.
- Do I need to sign in? Are my answers saved?
- You can see your results right away without signing in. Your answers are used only for scoring and are not stored on our servers.
- Can I bring these results into a counseling session?
- Use the analysis button at the bottom of the result screen to have a short conversation with Maeumi without signing in. After the conversation, you can continue in the app. The web conversation does not transfer automatically to the app.
- Can I send this check to a friend?
- Use Share test at the top of the screen to share the questionnaire link. This link does not contain your answers, result, name or account.
