Mini-SPIN social anxiety check: what three questions show

The Mini-SPIN is a brief social anxiety screening tool published by Connor and colleagues in 2001, built from three questions of the longer Social Phobia Inventory. It asks whether fear of embarrassment makes you avoid doing things or speaking to people, whether you avoid being the focus of attention, and whether looking foolish is among your worst fears, over the past week. This English page translates the CareOps Korean questionnaire and has not been independently validated in English.

Reading your results

Each question scores 0–4 for a total of 0–12. The result screen shows 0–5 as below the screening threshold, 6–8 as further assessment suggested and 9–12 as higher symptom burden. With only three questions, one answer moves the total a lot, so look at whether avoidance or fear is higher. A diagnosis is made in a clinical conversation. A score of 6 or more, or missing out on classes, work or relationships because of avoidance, is a reason to talk with a professional.

A question to reflect on

Recall one situation you avoided this week. Write the scene you feared most, such as freezing mid-sentence or blushing, and how you predicted people would react if it happened.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are in Social anxiety (Mini-SPIN), and how long does it take?
There are 3 questions, and it usually takes about 1 minute. For each question you choose one of 5 answers, from “Not at all” to “Extremely”. There are no right or wrong answers.
How is social anxiety different from being shy?
Feeling awkward with new people is common. This check looks at whether fear of embarrassment actually leads you to avoid things, which is what tends to affect daily life.
Are three questions enough?
The Mini-SPIN was designed as a quick screen. A higher result is a cue to look more closely at which situations feel hard and what you fear in them.
I took it during a week with a presentation and scored high.
It asks about the past week, so your schedule can shape the result. Retake it after a more typical week and compare the two.
Do I need to sign in? Are my answers saved?
You can see your results right away without signing in. Your answers are used only for scoring and are not stored on our servers.
Can I bring these results into a counseling session?
Use the analysis button at the bottom of the result screen to have a short conversation with Maeumi without signing in. After the conversation, you can continue in the app. The web conversation does not transfer automatically to the app.
Can I share my results with a friend?
Yes. Use Share at the top right of the result screen to send a friend the check itself, or share your result as a link or story image. A result link carries your scores inside the address only; it does not include your name or account, and nothing is saved on our side.
